2014 roundup

New year new me and all that crap time. Yay! When the skinny minnies post that they NEED to lose 20lbs, the wanderers waffle on about experiencing new things and everyone in between wants to save every penny they earn.

Instead of trying to change every last detail about yourself why not break a habit or set mini goals instead?

Why not take a moment and reflect on what you’ve achieved over the past year instead of jumping head first into being a marathon machine.

Let’s all just take a minute, make a brew and reflect on 2014 before diving into the next one.

Insert self indulgent schpeel.
In 2014 I found out that I like who I am. I know not everyone does but thats okay. I have fewer friends than ever but the ones I do have are worth their weight in gold.
I’ve struggled with anxiety a lot in 2014 and its something I’ve come to realise the hard way. Its been highlighted to me that I am a perfectionist and an ‘all or nothing sorta girl’ which I thought was trollocks at first but have now learnt that its true. I want to take time to look after myself in 2015 and slow my pace. I am going to make sure that I look after my mental health the same way I would my physical health as the two definitely correspond when it comes to moi.
I’ve had some pretty kick-ass moments but no shocks here, getting engaged was the top moment of 2014 for me. It came without warning and for weeks I couldn’t stop staring at my hand and smiling.
I feel blessed to have found the one so early in life but I know a marriage takes more than love and attraction. I cannot wait to get into wedding planning next year and hope you enjoy the more bridal elements that will be incorporated into Brazenrouge.
I travelled in 2014 something which I hadn’t done in a while and it was ah-mazing. Hands down the best place in the world, I have been to is IBIZA. It was one of the most intense, beautiful, hedonistic places in the world and knocked me for six. I’m desperate to go back but there will be no more holidays until 2017 unfortunately. I am looking to writing a post about Ibiza style for when the season starts. I’ll be seriously jel but I’ll go back to the white isle as soon as I possibly can. After returning home from Ibiza I had to assess my finances and completed my biggest achievement this year. Quitting smoking. I was so ashamed of smoking that I’m embarrassed to write it down. But with hard work I have achieved it and feel so much better for it. I hope that 2015 will become my first smoke free year in adulthood and my health, wallet and appearance will be greater for it.
Around the same time as quitting smoking I was sitting in the cold pouring rain on a night shift thinking there must be more to life than this and there was. There was a whole blogging community waiting to reach out and embrace a newbie blogger. It’s been nearly 3 months from when I posted that first tentative blog but I haven’t looked back yet. I’ve grown as a writer and my photography is improving. There is still a lot to learn but I can’t wait to continue growing as brazenrouge and getting my thoughts and ideas out to you guys. I hope to improve my blog design in 2015 and would love to reach a 1000 followers.

End of self indulgence.

So there was a brief summary of my year highlights.
Now onto the serious business of who were my beauty champions of 2014

Skin care- Garnier micellar cleansing water.

Base- MUA matte perfect primer.

Foundation-No7 beautifully matte foundation.

Eyeshadow- makeup revolution palettes.

Eyeliner- Maybelline lasting drama gel liner

Brow kit- sleek brow kit

Contour- Cargo contour set

Blush- Benefit bene-tint

Lip product- Collection 2000 Gothic Glam.

Take a bow beauty world, you have surpassed yourself.

So as I was saying ‘new year new me’ is just not realistic. I’ll be reaching for the red velvet cupcakes by February if I say to myself ‘Im gonna lose weight’
No, I’m gonna do this year differently.
Mini Goals for 2015- not resolutions. Deffo the way forward.
By setting myself little mini goals hopefully the bigger things will take care of themselves
So here are my mini goals-

GOAL Make small monthly instalments on my wedding venue.

THEORY Start early to avoid stress later and all that.

GOAL Learn a few healthy well rounded meals.

THEORY If I can cook well, I’ll be healthier which means I’ll look healthier.

GOAL Spend more time with people I love.

THEORY if Im with those I love, than I will think good thoughts.

but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.
Roald Dahl

You see, no pressured dead lines, no appearance focused hating, no this way or no way negativity you get with resolutions.

Mini goals have wiggle room and manoeuvrability. You can be flexible and take your time. There is less risk of failure and more chance of success.

So there it is, the last blog of the year.
I’ve loved writing this blog and cannot wait to see how it grows in 2015.

Please let me know in the comments if you agree with mini goals over resolutions.

What are you looking to change?
What are you proud of?
What content would you like to see in 2015?

So ba bye 2014 and hello twenty fifteen. I’m looking forward to meeting you.

Lots of Love

I’ve gone crackers for stackers.

Hi there,

Hope everyone had happy holidays. Mine were Ah-mazing, apart from a tummy bug I cannot shift for the life of me.
I received the most incredible, generous presents. I can’t remember a time when I have felt so spoilt. My bedroom after boxing day resembled a small regional boots and I couldn’t wait to organise my new acrylic stackers.
Yeah, you know those ones. The ones you see in a Kardashian bathroom.

The phenomenon started with the Kardashians a while ago. As do all the trends I’m into right now. But I’m for those of you who do not know, make up bags are done, fin, kaput. Besides the amount of germs these little waste pools collect it seems completely ridiculous to spend £1000’s on beautiful cosmetics for them to be zipped away in the dark.

This appealed to the terribly disorganised but longs to be tidy girl inside me. All my pretty cosmetics out on display without looking cluttered. Im in, you see one of the main problems with using a make up bag as a storage system (if you can call it a system) is that all your beautiful expensive items are squeezed and crammed into a small space and it is difficult to see where anything is.
The problem with not being able to see where everything is is simple.
If you cannot see your make up, you will not use it. You will inevitably reach for the same products day after day and then wonder why you’re stuck in a rut.

I am currently working on growing my acrylic storage collection.
It seems ironic that I need more space for more storage but anywhooo.
The below has been accumulated in the last 5 weeks.

MUJI has long been top dog of the acrylic storage world but there are other alternatives out there.

I for one loves me a bit of ebay action and heres how they tally up.

Here’s a list of some retailers where I know stock acrylic stackers.

They can be stacked and set out in a variety of ways. I haven’t got enough stackers just quite yet but I’m on a spending ban so am waiting till my buffdayyyyyy.

Heres how I set out my make up.

Zone 1is my newest addition to make up storage. The top isnt attached so in theory I can add another stacker in between.
I use these stackers for my face make up. In the top I store BB Creams, creme blushers and highlighters.
The drawers underneath house a variety of powders, bronzers and blushes.

Zone 2 was my first ever acrylic purchase and houses all my lipsticks. There is little rhyme or reason to the organisation here. All I do is display the colour at the top, so I can clearly see which shade I am going to use.
This only cost me 3 quid and is a great for a beginner.

Zone 3is where I get thrifty. I have some great Ted Baker pieces and they came in this beautiful box. It seemed a shame to throw it away. I store all my lipglosses and lip liners in here. Its easy to pull out and is cute to display. Definitely a cheap fix whilst Im waiting for more stackers. I also use Glossybox boxes to store odds and sods, nail varnishes e.t.c.

Zone 4 is my eye Zone. I often buy smaller mascaras or the gift set sizes are smaller than the average. This for me is perfect. Mascara goes off after 3 months and if you’re a beauty Junkie like me (11 mascaras currently in use) you never finish a whole tube before its off. I take the mini mascaras and my night eye serum and place them in the front. Eyeliners in the back, my go to Palettes then finally browzings and sleek brow kit in the corners.

Remember that these do get very very grubby. I would recommend that when your brushes have their weekly wash (Yes! Weekly!) that you give the stackers a quick wipe down.

I hope I have opened your mind to new Storage solutions. They make me smile when I look at them. Save me time (no more searching for THAT concealer) saves me money (c’mon who hasn’t bought items they already had cos they couldn’t find it!)
Its chic but practical, stylish but effective.
Let me know if you buy any and how you get on.

Love Chlo

Hall of Shame

I’ve decided that this tweet needs to be addressed.

I commonly tell people who procrastinate that Ghandi only had 24 hours in a day too!
I’m normally met with an eye roll or a sneer.
However, I believe its true. If I want to fit a blog in before Christmas I shall.

Howwwevvvaaaa, there is no point blogging for bloggings sake.

So I’ve pondered over this one. A tutorial, a review or a challenge?

Then I thought, I’ve not bought anything this month (beauty wise) due to the annual tightening of belts and how annoyed I was at wasting my money on the Pro-Formula Micellar cleansing water. Review can be found here.

Which got me thinking. Whats in my hall of shame? Which products do I think are naff and think you should know about too?
Now I’ve only been blogging for a few months but I’ve been wasting money for the last ten years on pots of potion and magical formulas.

Learn from my mistakes and veto the following-

Anti cellulite creams

Omg how many times have I bought these! They are the most pointless product end of! They’re very rarely cheap, laborious to apply and never work. Cellulite are simply fat cells. This is not to say that those who have cellulite (95% of all women I know) are fat. Slim women also have cellulite and this is just down to genetics, diet and the shape of the cells. No cream you can apply to your skin can burn fat cells. If they could, surely everyone would later up rather than joining Weightwatchers to lose weight? If cellulite is getting you down, the best thing to do is make skin baby smooth. Get a hearty salt scrub. Not a wimpy one. Scrub the effected area and follow with a moisturizer. For ultimate Pin up girl legs, fake tan is the way forward.

Bust gels

Personally I’ve never used a bust gel but know those who have. Yes they were disappointed and out of pocket. The reason I can definitively add this to the hall of shame is because the whole notion is trollocks.
Your boobies are mounds of fatty tissue on your chest. No creme, gel, lotion or potion can penetrate your skin and add fat tissues.
Completely ridic.

Skinny wraps

My personal bug bear. I bought into a twelve week challenge before my holiday in the summer. Now I was eating correctly an 80/20 approach (eat right 80% treat yourself 20% of the time)
I was exercising 5x a week trying to flatten my pooch (the area between the belly button and the nunny)
I saw all the promises, and was sold.
I followed the steps, watched the YouTube clips, read the science behind it and they didn’t work. I didn’t see any inch loss, nor know anyone not affiliated to an inch loss company who had lost weight or inches. Save your cash and learn to love your body. Thats what Im doing and its far healthier and happier of an existence.

Frosted lip sticks

Oh Frosted lip stick. You were past it before I was even born. It is the shell suit of make up. It makes your lips look dry and flakey. Save your money girls and boys this will never be so weird its cool. Not even Hipsters pull this off.

Diet pills

Okay so firstly, the idea that you feel you need a tablet is scary. If you only ever follow one piece of advice I give. Let it be this. Do not mess around with diet pills. I have done and it is not nice. The ones I used, from a ‘reputable’ brand were designed to help with weight loss. I was at the time, very insecure and thought my appearance was the only thing I had to offer. Then I found Sarcasm 🙂
I used these pills and I had excruciating headaches. I did lose weight, however the fact I was running 5k’s at the time probably did that. I was wired, I would be so on it, imagine drinking 10 espressos then having the worlds worst hangover/headache 3 hours later. I couldn’t wee however I seem to be unique in this reaction.
Which I think makes it even more scary. So many people have so many different types of side effects how do you not know you are gonna be one of the minority who has a heart attack. Exactly, you don’t. Try to accept your shape, embrace your size and stick to a healthy lifestyle.
Remember the first three letters of DIET is die. Coincidence? I think not.

Neck cream
So as a double chinner, with or without opening your front camera on snap chat. I particularly bought into this one. WRONG! Again. A normal firming moisturiser does exactly the same job. Its just packaging and market exploitation peeps. Save your money. If you have a Fred Elliot chin like mine (younguns, google him he was on corrie, Donkeys ago) take photographs at a higher angle. Poke your tounge into the roof of your mouth. Its not drastic but offers a slight improvement.

So there you go, have you got anything to add to the hall of Shame?

The 5 product in 5 minutes face Yall!

Buenos dias!

Hope you’re all well. It’s been a busy time for me as an auntie this week. With 4 beautiful nieces I try to attend as many events as I can. Trying to juggle family, friends, work and blogging can be hard work. Extremely rewarding but sometimes a logistical minefield.
Often I have to decide whether beauty products outranks beauty sleep which Im sure is something you’re all familiar with.
Today I needed an extra half hour snooze time but still wanted to look fresh faced.

I created a day time natural look using 5 products. I did so in around 5 minutes.

This is what I used in order to achieve a dewy daytime look.

no7 beautifully matte foundation cool vanilla
Price £13.50

Bellapierre cheek tint colour coral

Rimmel Kate Moss scandaleyes colour jet black

MUA translucent powder

Nivea essential care lip balm

So I started with my hands down go to guy of a foundation. No7 beautifully matte foundation is one of the best foundations I have ever used. I was colour matched at the counter and I am tremendously pleased with the shade. This base offers full coverage without appearing cakey or like an oompa loompa love child. The tube itself has no bells or whistles but the pump is effective. This foundation is a heavy liquid foundation but does not feel unnatural on the face. I have never had the dreaded tide line that cursed me throughout my teens. I love that No7 have included an SPF15 in the product as this means I have adequate protection from the sun without having to add another step to my morning routine. My pores are less noticeable and my blemishes are disguised.
I apply 3 ‘pumps’ of the product to the back of my hand and using a stipple brush dab the product onto my face. The reason why I like this product is because it is buildable. For a more formal look I would use a foundation brush. However I find that by stippling this product onto my face, starting from the nose and dabbing outwards towards the jaw line leaves a natural dewy finish.

Next off I use one of my new handbag essentials I turn to Bellapierre cheek tint. I recently reviewed this as it was a product in my monthly Glossy box.
Creme blushers are extremely easy to apply and enable you to apply without carrying around a brush.
I apply to the apples of my cheek and due to the formula of this product it is incredibly easy to blend. It offers a subtle pop of colour breathing life into this day time look.
Avoid applying to close to the nose as with any blusher this can cause you to appear a tad ‘flu-ey’

Ah! The Rimmel Kate moss mascara. I often slate Rimmel but I am yet to find a mascara that beats this.
The brush is very fat and the colour is extremely dark.
The brush mirrors that of a broken heart and like a good woman, the curves on this beauty should be respected.
The narrow curve infiltrates your tiny lashes on the inner corner of your eyes coating them with a darker than night mascara. With the narrow curve in the correct position to look after the littluns, the large curve can sort out the big boys. It is in primary place to stroke the longer lashes, spreading them far and wide helping you achieve what I call the ‘doll eye’ look. I take the wand and whilst looking down brush my lashes with the first two coats of mascara. So you are brushing away from the lash line towards the floor.
Now opening the eye take the wand and looking up place the brush at the base if your lashes. In a zig zag motion wiggle the brush from side to side.
Repeat once on the lower lashes
The reason I love this mascara is that you can build up the lashes. A few coats achieves full bodied, intense black lashes but it is easy to continue and sports thick, dark, long lashes without appearing to smuggling a pair of spiders on your face.

Next up I grab my MUA translucent face powder.
I love this powder as it is beautifully sheer and lightweight. This is a perfect setting powder. The loose powder is perfect as it fixes my foundation in place all day. It minimises my shiny chin and it never feels heavy. It doesn’t seem to cling to those tiny fine hairs on your face.
Taking a powder brush I dab it in the loose powder, then tap it to remove the excess. I don’t bother with the sifter as I don’t feel I get enough product. To apply I start from the centre of my face. Blending outwards and hey presto onto the final step.

Nivea lip balm.
This product is so established there is little I can say to hype it up. I adore it and its so easy to use.
This balm is really moisturising and prevents my lips from being chapped or flaky. Due to there being no colour it is fool proof to apply.
For the price this lip balm lasts for months even with daily use.

So there you go 5 products that can be applied in 5 minutes

Don’t say I don’t treat ya!

Ciao for now.

@Brazenrouge on Twitter and Instagram yeah?

Tesco Pro-Formula Micellar Cleansing Water. Slated.

Tesco Pro-Formula Micellar Water 200Ml
Price £3
So after falling hard for the Garnier Micellar cleansing water (review can be found here

I have been obsessed with finding out if Garnier is top dog when it comes to cleansing waters.
I’ve kept my eye out and spotted this little Gem on the shelves of Tesco and it was the price that caught my eye, natch.

Tesco say
Green Tea & Vitamin E Complex

Scientifically developed for Tesco

to remove impurities

for face, eyes & lips

The Pro Formula Radiance Micellar Water contains
green tea and vitamin E complex. It will leave the
skin feeling clean, soft and soothed, whilst
removing the last traces of everyday dirt and
make-up. A non-drying formulation for fresher
feeling and toned skin.

Dermatologically tested.

Okay, so I mentioned the price so lets get started with that.

Yes it is £3 which is 99p cheaper than Garnier. Sounds great, until I realised that the Tesco bottle was significantly smaller.

The Pro-Formula contains only 200ml HALF what Garnier offers.

So really, if Pro-Formula was the same size as Garnier than it would cost £6.

Next up, packaging. Both have similar concepts with the bottles being transparent. Pro-Formula is more rectangular and has a green cap. This isn’t offensive, I just prefer the curves on the Garnier bottle with the sweet little pink top.

I detested the scent in the Pro-Formula product. It stunk of Aloe Vera dipped in cucumber and was so unpleasant. YUCK. The bottle cap design meant that with the Pro-Formula Micellar water, too much product left the bottle when trying to apply to a cotton pad. This infuriated me as more ended up down the sink than on my face.

Perhaps this was a blessing in disguise. As when it did reach my face, it dripped and ran down my cheeks. Never seeming to wipe anything away with it. To remove my facial make up took about 6 or 7 cotton pads. The Garnier water used about 2. It merely smeared lipstick across my face until a dry cotton pad scrubbed it off.

It doesn’t get much better in case you’re wondering. When applied to my eyes, it stung. Seriously uncomfortable. My eyes were streaming and my eye make up seemed to hibernate under my lower lash line. I couldn’t apply any more to my eyes as they felt so sore I just left it.

Cue waking up like a panda who’s be on the lash the night before.

I quite frankly hate this product. I know hate is a strong word but detest sounds far too flamboyant.

I can find no redeeming feature.
