But first, let me take a selfie

Hi hi,

So unless you’ve been living under a rock you’ll know that the selfie is synonymous with the 21st century.

However, did you know that the first recorded selfie was taken by a Mr Robert Cornelius?

No, I didn’t either but hey ho now you do.
(I wonder what filter he used)

Fast forward to 2014 and pretty much everyone has a phone in their pocket that has a more powerful camera than Marty McFly could’ve dreamed of.

It makes me sad when I hear people say ‘I don’t do photos’ or ‘I’m not photogenic’
You just don’t know how to take a photo.
I’m no Cara-Tyra-Kate but I am Chloe and I can take a slamming selfie.

I’ll show you how.

Selfies are like sperm, only one in a million make it.
Its true, its crude, my mums gonna tell me off for talking about sperm, again! But hey, its true. You will not get a Rihanna style selfie on the first attempt. It will take time and patience but keep snapping. With my tips you’ll have a new display pic in no time.

Background should be at the forefront of your mind.
So, you’re all thinking can we get to the point, Clo? Shush! No negativity. I’m serious. Background is uber important. Although the night out toilet selfie is classic and should be appreciated. It isn’t the look we’re going for here. Clean the clutter behind you, remove any items with personal details i.e bank statements and make sure your Dad isn’t mooning in the background.

(see, even I was guilty)

Lighting baby
There is nothing better than natural lighting. Windows are your friend, face them head on.
Stand so that the natural light is illuminating your face. Hello free highlighter, me likey. A good lighting tip to remember is when you are getting ready to snap, tap on the darkest bit of the picture. Doing this tells the lens to focus there. This adds the most light into your photo and we all know lighting is our new BFF.

I’m loving angles instead.
So we got the lighting, we got the background. Lets talk angles. No don’t worry its not a maths lesson on triga-what-now. (Stay in school kids).
Angles. Oh em gee, If I have to tell my other half that square on straight to camera is not a good look I’ll be as blue as an Avatar.
Angles are so important. Turn your head a couple of degrees to the left or the right. You will find a side you prefer after a while. The problem comes when your bestie has the same side and you’re scrapping for some right side reveal action but I digress.
Tilt your head to your favourite side, this will make your face appear less flat, now dip your chin. Your face should be at a 3/4 angle.
Now extend your arm out and above your face, A shot from above makes your eyes appear bigger and your face slimmer #win.

Composition is important. This is art.

I am not a fan of the centred Selfie, its a display picture not a mugshot.
I like to use the rule of thirds in a selfie. When you open up the camera on your Iphone it will have a grid like so

This divides the screens into thirds.
The rule of thirds suggest that the most aesthetically pleasing photos are the ones where two lines of the image are divided into thirds intersect.
See how my eye is at the intersection and off centre?

Cosmetics are key, Darling
Wear the right make up. I prefer matte finish make up as its less likely to appear shiny. Rock a strong lip and add blush. You can always tone it down later in the editing. It won’t be as strong on camera as it appears in the flesh.

Filter wisely
If you must filter, which I will explain why you need not in a jiffy. Stick with Valencia.
We have all experimented but it all gets a bit weird. Valencia offers a warm tone. I wish Valencia filter could be added to real life.

Aviary is not just a bird house ( I think)

So Instagram is great. We can all look at each others narcissistic selfies (yeah and what) or that chai tea latte mocha to go with your name written comically incorrectly (guilty)
But we can step it up now. You’re selfie Queens (and Kings, Brazenrouge is inclusive)
Download Aviary. It is awesome.

Aviary makes it simple to crop which IG cannot.
Aviary has a blemish tool that actually works, you can whiten your teeth and add texts to your photos can I hear #freeadvertising ?

There’s so much more you can do on there but seriously download it. It is epic.

Mess around with tilt shift and saturation either on IG or aviary.
Snapseed is another great app for editing photos.
You’ve got your perfect snap, its how far you want to take it.

Here I’ve used the following function

This helps to rid of annoying distractions and photobombers.

tilt shift

This enhances where you want the focus to be i.e chest and cleavage, then fades out the rest of the area.

saturation and contrast

This tools adds depth to your photos. I don’t think there is a hard and fast rule with this. Just have a go with the sliding bar and see what you like.

blemish tool

This works simply by tapping the area you wish to conceal and it literally just replaces it with the nearest colour on the image. I’ve done this on my freckle just to show you that it works. I’ve also used it on a spot on my top lip. SEXY!

And the final product.

So get snapping peeps!
Have fun, mix up your IG with photos other than yourself and be confident you can nail the perfect selfie.

Glossybox. Addiction to Subscription

Hi hi,
Anyone else limbering up for Black friday sales. Seriously, I feel like Katniss about to enter the games! Im gonna kick serious retail arse.
Although as with all missions (yea this is a mission) sometimes you tend to neglect yourself, no 3 for 2’s, no gonna try this new product or explaining to your partner that this shade of red matte lipstick will actually change my life.
None of it. This mission is all about giving back to the fam-a-lam.
But I couldn’t do it. Not all that shopping without treating moi!
So I decided that I would succumb to a beauty box and this would be a little pressie to myself.
And for a tenner too! I’d be mad to miss out.
I decided to start with Glossy box as my sister has been using them for ages. I love the presentation and figure they’re well established so would give it a go

I was going to write about all the products but have been wanting to Vlog for a while now. So I have tested the products (awks) on camera and have given my reviews.

This is new for me so let me know if you like the video or loath it. I’ll only learn with feedback.

Contouring, its free photoshop! Tutorial

Hi hi,

We all know as the winter months draw in that we can feel a little bit beige about life. Wake up in the dark, come home in the dark. Our tans have faded along with our diet and gym routines.

If you’re anything like me you will have lost weight for your summer holiday, vowed to stick at it when you return home and then found yourself eating a small countries yearly quota of white carbs.

Yay for jeans and jumpers eh? Gives us a couple of months to get back on the healthy bandwagon and enjoy our christmas treats.

However, there is no jeans and jumpers for your face (I mean if you can grow a beard go you, I love Conchita)IMG_3371.JPG
so I needed to find a way to slim down my boat AND bring some banging bronze to my face.

Enter Contouring, the frugal girls photoshop.

I have found it confusing for so long. But no more! I have wanted to crack it for ages but have always struggled with it. I believe I have found the method in achieving a slimmer, prettier face.

I will say now, this will not make you look like Kim Kardashian.
Now I’m not hating, I just think I should make it clear that a lot of her photos are enhanced and photoshop is commonly used in the images we are shown. I still love her and there is no denying she is incredibly beautiful but know now this look is ‘Kim-esque’ Because not even Kim K looks like Kim K.

Okay that bit over, onto the fun stuff.
You will need

Concealer brush
Contouring brush
Powder brush
Blusher brush
Large fan brush

A concealer
A bronzer
A Translucent powder
A highlighter

Okay prep your face, primer, foundation tra la la la la. Take your lighter concealer and with a concealer brush place on your face in the areas shown below.

Okay so you’re looking cray and things are gonna get weird around here.
Take your contouring brush a la this beauty

And bronze up the areas as depicted on the diagram. (So not the intended use of the word diagram)

Take a clean concealer brush and blend, blend, blend.

Okay so you’re looking better but still very streaky. Take a large powder brush and buff, buff, buff. Blend away all those harsh lines, so the bronzed blends into the bright.

So far so good.

Take a highlighter (powder or liquid) and apply over the previously concealed areas with a fan brush. Think of this as adding a little bit of fairy dust to your face. We want shimmer and sparkly not shine!
Next up is a simple pink blush. Take a blush brush and apply to your apples. About a fingers width in from your nose and I like to just blush outwards, stopping underneath the outer corner of my eye.

Finish the rest of your make up such as eyes, lipstick and your finishing spray.

Heres the finished look. It does take a bit of time but I do feel extra special when I’ve put this look on.

Hope this is helpful
lots of love

Mani Monday Madness!

So its Monday mani madness today, Eek!
Great way to start the week and I have a huge new trend to fill you in on.

Nail art is a bit of a grey area for me. Part of me loves it for casual days when you need a little bit of glitz in your life but less is deffo more.

In comes my new favourite trend.

I’m in love.

Its simple yet expressive and really really easy to do.

Let me ‘splain.

I got this little set off Amazon and it will make a great present for the quirky girl in your life.

Nails Inc Monogram Manicure Collection

Price £18
The set comes with three 4ml nail varnishes
The Southbank (cool grey nude) Mayfair Place (deep plum).
Kensington Caviar (clear top coat)

A piddly little stick and 4 sheets of letters and symbols.

Paint your nails as normal. The nail varnish was great. It only took 2 coats and dried in under 15 minutes #winning.
The fiddly bit is peeling off the stickers. I bent back the sheet and using the wooden stick, placed them on the nail. Now when I placed my O it was lower than I wanted and when I tried to remove it took a bit of the nail varnish with it, fume.
So when placing the symbols be super careful and pay attention.
Once placed and pleased apply the top coat and leave to dry.

I love the finished look. The hardest bit was working out what to say.

Now I’m sure you could pick up the symbols somewhere cheaper and you could use any nail colour you like but this is a pretty sweet set for christmas time.

I would recommend to anyone who loves nail art or the monogram trend.

Get involved and tweet @nailsinc and me @chloelingane using #monogrammani so I can check you all out.

Get expressive!
